I wore white at my funeral. The sun shone crystal rain. Fragile songs within their bells, wind among the baby's breath. I wore white at my funeral like birthday frosting paste, the glue of a cloud's ache. Icicles on eves. I wore white at my funeral as if to earn my bones. The hard-won, long-fought dream to never die uneyed, alone. I wore white at my funeral. The earth wore winter green. They also wore her footsteps, the imprints of her knees. She said burn ... together. |

I may be taking this too far in my head--but I love the inference of white as purity and re-birth--indicating to me a metaphorical death and spiritual rebirth. To call this a "deep" poem would sound like a bad pun--but hey? why should I break a trend? *grin* (oh, I am back for a bit today...have missed ya) Amazing brain you have there Mike. |

Glad you both enjoyed. It's inspired by reading an account of someone who wore black for years, who then had a close friend die, and decided to wear white instead at the funeral (and then the essay goes on to decry why she wore black in the first place). That's a pretty confused person, but who cares? It gave me a good idea for a poem. Thanks for readin'. She said burn ... together. -TON [This message has been edited by bsquirrel (07-09-2002 01:50 PM).] |

I wore white at my funeral. The earth wore winter green. They also wore her footsteps, the imprints of her knees. Quite a powerful write, squirrel. Particularly liked this verse. Interesting origin of an idea. I’ll go to puppy class…if Tracey will go to cooking class |

I like the source of your inspire...but not so sure if white is a confused choice...without sounding too morbid? considering the symbolism, maybe it's always been backward. Dunno...grin, I'm a pretty confused person myself! |

Thanks, everyone! (and you're in a good mood d/T) And Sen, I didn't mean that white's a confused choice. I meant, in the context of the essay, it seems strange how she uses white -- to say that she's now beyond black, which she wore for years before with no problem until something "serious" happened, so it's time to put away the toys. That seems confused, and a bit naive. (but grief's a weird thing) I think white at a funeral would be cool. And how about more black at weddings? Heh heh. She said burn ... together. |

ditto the black weddings here... (from my own of course!) but um...we had some purple in the midst of that...which I'm sure works just as well!!! so..Mikey...you gonna wear a black dress to your wedding??? THAT is something I think Karen and I would have to drive down for!!! Oh yes... Open arms can be the most fragile in the world... |

Thanks, Nancy. D -- hmm, interesting suggestion. Uh, how would driving from either California or Louisiana to Calgary be considered driving down? Mike, somewhere around (and pondering the idea of "Black wedding" for a poem now!) She said burn ... together. -TON [This message has been edited by bsquirrel (07-09-2002 05:00 PM).] |

Hey, if anyone's wearing the black wedding dress, it's me. Nothing less than velvet and chiffon will be accepted, and I think that'll blow any budget our wedding will have right there... But still. I think this poem's too goth to be in Open, baby, but hey, yr choice. And the end REALLY reminds me of something I wrote... Peter on his knees in front of Krys' coffin. Y'know. Only minus the entire flipping out part. God, I'm smiley. I should go to bed. It's almost 5 in the moooorning. And I have discovered my two bondage bracelets, when clasped together, make a collar. Yep, bedtime. "Es ist Folter, aber ich bin fast dort." Robert Smith's Torture in Deutsch. |

I wore white at my funeral like birthday frosting paste, the glue of a cloud's ache. Icicles on eves. I read this one over and over, Mr.Squirrel...I even read it out loud to my husband. We both agree, it is brilliant....so very thought provoking and full of vivid imagery. But, I hope you aren't planning to have your funeral any time soon.... I think the wedding would be a better idea. ~ hugs from the other rodent here Lyra |

Ya know? I heard through the grapevine that this and Wedding Black were "Must Reads". Yes. Indeed. ~wranx "Writing is a perfectly natural thing to do...provided it's done in private and you wash your hands afterward"....Heinlein. |

This thing's getting kinda popular, baby. And you realize that this whole idea of Funeral white is gonna work its way into the Kissably saga, right? Ebony, anyone? "Silly bunny, there are no monsters in here." - Chrys, from Gloom Cookie |
