An oldie I’m bringing back, because I am thinking about . . . writing a novel about this . . . Big rig driver made a stop that cold night, To top off with diesel and eat a bite, Headed to El Paso with a full load, On a south Texas dreary mountain road. She stood to the side of the cafe's door, He averted his eyes, thought her a bore. After his meal, he drank a cup of joe, He drank the coffee and paid what he owed. She was still there, bent against the cold wind, "Please, Mister," she said, "I just need a friend." He did a double take; she was with child, A desperate soul as she tried to smile. He loaded her up inside his warm cab, She said, "Thank you," and her stomach she grabbed. He went back inside for something to eat, She gobbled it up and said aren't you sweet. Now that she was there, what was he to do? He timidly asked her when are you due? She said there was no family or friends, No one in the world for her to depend. In the mountain range of Guadalupe, Her labor began, she asked him to pray. He pulled off the road and shut the rig down, It was much too far to get to a town. The baby was coming, it would not wait, Into the sleeper awaiting her fate, He tried to help, but it was just his luck, They were both stuck out there in his old truck. The blood soaked everything, even her screams, There was no water, not even a stream. The baby came and mother died on cue, How he got through it all he never knew. He held the squealing, bloody baby girl, And something inside him started to swirl. The babe started out, the odds against her, The blood-spattered child was only a cur. In El Paso he made all the right stops, Hospital for child, and they called the cops. Mother buried in potter's field so sad, He claimed the child, saying he was her dad. ©July 27, 2009 / Jerry Pat Bolton ~*~ When they give you ruled paper write sideways. ~*~ |

Well, aren`t you just a story telling wizard. This work is musically lyrical Jerry and it flows so well. Reminds me of some sort of country song even though it`s long. Well written my friend and as usual you get your little slab of dark in there to bring things right back to reality. Not everyone can do the positives and the negatives and come out with such conclusions. Write on! true love never looks after it's own interests |

Thank you my friend for wading through this fairly long poem. I had fun with this one, and yes, oh yes, I had to deal some dark. Thank you again, I so appreciate your kind thoughts. ~*~ When they give you ruled paper write sideways. ~*~ |

I think this would wrap nicely in a book, so many aspects of emotion and full of LIFE. take care ~d Open arms can be the most fragile in the world... |

Thank you, devina, for your thoughtful comments on my poem, they are greatly appreciated. Yes, my ideas which are percolating will have the daughter, almost grown, she will be into her teens, who finds herself on a dangerous journey to find her father (the truck driver) who has mysteriously dropped out of site. ~*~ When they give you ruled paper write sideways. ~*~ |

What a great story! Even the ending is a beginning - would make a great book! |

Thank you, suthern, I am glad you found this poem. Right about the ending. I plan on beginning the novel when the daughter is fifteen and will follow her as she escapes from her aunt's evil ways and tries to find her father (the trucker) who has disappeared. ~*~ When they give you ruled paper write sideways. ~*~ |

Writing a novel is on my bucket list. You have quite the head start on me with just the concept here. Would definitely take up the challenge if I were you, Jer. Would love to see it. Michael |

Thanks Michael. Get started on that novel. Just begin to write. Words will flow. Don't get discouraged when you come to a place where you don't know what to write in order to move the novel forward. Write, Michael. I have written a few novels and have published them. Thank you for your kind words concerning the poem being turned into a novel, I greatly appreciate them. ~*~ When they give you ruled paper write sideways. ~*~ |
