Walk away Hero A Prose Poem For some time now The old transit van had been illegally parked ignored by the passing crowd Though maybe a dog would have inquired at the faint smell of marzipan In the Landrover we were bound for Jericho Safe home behind the garlands of razor wire Soldier talk. Girls, boobs, legs, football Sweat and the release of testosterone It was always the same The explosion was close, two streets away Physically rocking the Rover I looked at Ballard the driver and nodded We nosed through the retreating crowd Towards the smoke and falling roof tiles Shop mannequins lay with the living and dead Swallowing the bile in my throat I felt an insane need to laugh I couldn’t see any children. Couldn’t handle that She lay across the kerb on the far side pavement Perhaps in her thirties or younger Not plain, not pretty and unconscious Her dress waist high I adjusted it to give her a semblance of dignity I never touched the wound but a tourniquet was a simple option I took the scarf from her neck Tied it with a double loop around her upper arm used the bayonet to twist and tighten A dislodged roof tile shattered a few feet away I sheltered her with my body We lay together like two daylight lovers I was nineteen and growing up Fast * * * Today you may take a paid tour round the Belfast murals where the dead martyrs look down from the painted walls I wonder if that walk away hero is among them. Even thirty years on I could easily elevate him personally to the Warriors Valhalla |

I have never been in the vicinity of bombs exploding. Never was in a war zone, except for the two lost decades living on and off the mean streets of America. Liked this look back at terror, Cari. ~ If they give you ruled paper, write sideways. ~ |

I did two tours of Ireland in the ‘Troubles’ and I suppose it has some relevance in today’s car bombs. This scum should never inspire anything that’s remotely heroic. To park a vehicle stacked with semtex, set the timer and walk away is cold blooded murder of the innocent, nothing else. They didn’t give a toss as long as it made the evening TV screens. Thanks for reading. I always look forward to your comments. Cari. |

You're right Cari, nothing but gutless cowards! I got the vivid visuals from your verses. I don't know if the right words really exist. Eric true love never looks after it's own interests |

Seriously, this is so vivid and thought provoking. The subject matter is hard, but it's worth experiencing through your well handled plume. |

There is nothing more complex than Irish politics, its impossible to find where religion ends and the politics takes over. I was just nineteen then and knew next to nothing about the sectarianism that is the norm in the country. You can only identify yourself with either faction if you completely ignore your own conscience. For example a leader of an IRA cell that was responsible for a street bomb in Armagh that included a nine year old child among the dead, turned out to be a catholic priest. What did he do after the massacre? Absolve himself of his sins in his own confessional box? As a naïve teenager I patrolled the mean streets totally perplexed. Belfast was much like any city in those times. People went about their business. Women shopped, gossiped on street corners; took their kids to school and fell in and out of love, but did so in the knowledge that they might never see the next day. Thanks for reading, appreciated.
