Old Man’s Pit Bar-b-Que

I could see it –
I couldn’t feel it –
Hell, I couldn’t even
move it out of the way.
My big toe I mean.
The one on the left foot
that used to hurt so bad.
The one that beady-eyed
rat was so fiendishly
chewing on. Couldn’t
move the leg either –
couldn’t spit that far –
couldn’t do an outhouses
favorite stink about it.
Not since my head
about exploded,
it hurt so bad. Not since
I fell here, back against
the front wall of
Old Man’s Pit Bar-b-que.
Not since those three things
attacked me inside,
tore out my throat,
most of one arm,
and left twenty-feet
of entrails
from the bar to here,
where they dumped me –
still Alive, or cognizant,
aware, or whatever the hell
you want to call it.
All I can do is roll my eyes
side to side, up and down . . .
All I can do
is watch that stupid rat,
gnaw on my toe,
watch the stream of ants
now coming up
my arm -
all I can do . . .

Oh shite –
there comes my wife.

Oh man! I didn't know if I should cry or laugh until I cried. What a great story, I hope you made this up in that wild and crazy mind of yours. That last line was perfect!
