I am sad to say that it has been a long time since I have written a poem and posted here in the forums, but I am happy to say that it feels good to have jotted down a few lines to share. I hope to see some familiar faces and read some new work over the next while. *** I Miss You So The days and years have trundled on, Each moment there ... and then it’s gone, A snapshot held in time and mind To pile upon yet more in kind. Each memory stacks upon the next, As I look back, a bit perplexed To see the endless heap of time When I was young and in my prime. I sit and ponder things I’ve done, The losses lost ... the winnings won, Momentous at the time, and yet Irrelevant in circumspect. I often raced through days on end With high demands in bold pretend, No sacrifice too great or small As expectations swallowed all. I could not see the time I’d lost, I could not see what it had cost, Each moment I had squandered then Would never come to me again. If I could add up all those hours, And then through super-human powers Bestow them to this older “me” ... Ohhh, what a joy that gift would be. Imagine if that time could trace Me back to see your smiling face, To hold your hand, to laugh, to cry, To talk, to hug ... oh my, oh my. I miss you so, I want more days To share with you in endless ways, And yet this wiser “me” has found We cannot change the past that’s bound. Those ticking clocks are ruthless foes Oblivious to wanton woes, And so the lessons learned are clear ... Hold close your loved ones, while they’re here. Kit Detering (Kit McCallum) 2020 |

Kit...So very nice to read your poetry again. The last stanza of this poem hit a nerve in me, because I have suffered a loss in my life recently. Really enjoyed this poem and the memories it awakened in me. Thanks for sharing..Paul ~~To share my poems with you is to share my heart with you~~ |

“I sit and ponder things I’ve done, The losses lost ... the winnings won, Momentous at the time, and yet Irrelevant in circumspect.’ This is a place I think we all end up at, Kit. Hits hard too. I found myself reading this and thinking we grow wiser but by the time we get there, it’s often too late. Then you hit that nail on the head with that very concept as you finished. The choices we make in the vanity and believed invulnerability of youth are the hardest of Time’s lessons. I do not know whom you are speaking to in this poem, but it is thoughtful and beautiful and I know many of us here must relate to it. I am so glad to see you posting here. I hope you will continue to grace us with your presence. I’ve missed you. Michael |

So glad you are back. Sometimes it is so hard to learn the lessons we are put here to learn. |

Michael, thank you for your thoughtful words. This poem came on the eve of the 11th anniversary of the loss of my mom. My writing went on a fairly lengthy hiatus after she died. Her loss and some other life changes slowed down my writing a great deal, but I have missed it and I do hope it becomes a little more plentiful. I have missed you and your heartfelt writing as well. It is so nice to see and read you again. Jwesley, I see you and some of the other names here and agree wholeheartedly, it feels like I have slipped back in time and that feels really good. It’s wonderful to say hello again. Marchmadness, thank you for the warm welcome back and your understanding. It is good to know so many of us go through these same lessons. I only hope that I have learned from them and can apply them. Augustsky, It is wonderful to meet you. Thank you so much for letting me know you found this relatable … I appreciate your kind words Sky. Much appreciation to all, /Kit |

I have found that, in coming back, I never really left. Hello, my friend. . . it is good to read your words again. These speak of things lost. . . I have learned that, while we can look back, we must move forward. . . it is all that we can do. . . -- That which gives light must endure burning. |

"I could not see the time I’d lost, I could not see what it had cost, Each moment I had squandered then Would never come to me again." And they don't come again, but there is time for new moments. We simply go forward and live them. It's all we can do. We have no choice it seems. "Those ticking clocks are ruthless foes Oblivious to wanton woes, And so the lessons learned are clear ... Hold close your loved ones, while they’re here" Although the holding won't erase the pain when they're gone this is still what we must do. Time will stomp through no matter what. Did I mention how amazing it is to see you here? For me it feels strange to be back here after so many lessons learned throughout the years and after mistakes repeated as well. Still. We write on. We must do that as well. "How much is real? So much to question |

I sit and ponder things I’ve done, The losses lost ... the winnings won, Momentous at the time, and yet Irrelevant in circumspect. While it is difficult to choose a favorite verse in the wonderful write... I can honestly say, "I wish I had written this verse." Beautiful, Kit. |
