Dust to Dust Ash to ash and dust to dust That’s what the Bible said There’s someone dying or arriving Underneath my bed It’s funny how our kids interpret What we try to teach The obvious becomes obscure To little minds we reach I well recall the misconceptions Born in childhood Repeating those familiar words I never understood I thought trespasses were a crime They said it was a sin Why did Jesus emphasize The act of breaking in I thought that psalms were fan shaped leaves From off a coconut tree And that “The quicker the dead” you are The better off you’d be “Hark thee, Harold” we would sing And sing it just because I never knew what “hark thee” meant Or who this Harold was “God rest ye married gentlemen Let nothing you display” I sang with all my little heart In church on Christmas day “We three kings of Orientar” A place not known on earth Brought to the little baby Jesus “In cents, golden worth” What splendor from the mouths of babes The world has always known But we had fun with little Innuendoes of our own What did the mother skunk say To her family in distress We’d giggle when the preacher Answered it with humbleness A childhood joke invoking smiles Still sticks with me today Every time I here the famous supplication “Let us spray” Elizabeth Santos |

Wonderful poem - well written and full of wit. I sometimes envy those that believe in the biblical God - oh how much easier it would be for me. Spent years searching, became a reverend in my learning and still cannot believe in such as he. But love you poem! ~netswan |

Netswan, I know what you mean, I had a hard time with that also until events changed my life. I don't have much Bible learning, but a lot of what I believe was learned the hard way, not from books or Sunday school. My convictions are impossible to funnel into any one "denomination" But I do know one thing. sometimes we don't find the answers to questions because the answers are so obvious that we don't think to look there. That is why I wrote a poem once about why we ask the why of things, delving into the past, into the stars, into the inner reaches of the mind, when the answer is "in a sparrow's sing". Just stop and listen. There He is. Liz |

Thank you Liz --- I understand. I know so many that have found the bible and are so content and happy in life. I am envious _OOPS a sin --*smile* I have studied the bible tons as was not raised with God ---my grandmother the most wonderful person I ever knew - was a Christian Scientist - lived a life full of love and goodness. I got in a religious discussion and some Zealot said Grandma's church was a cult and she would be burning in hell right now. I was shocked and of course very angry -------as I said, never met a more loving unhypocritical person in my life -----and after that fell into deep lathargy and STUDIED with a vengeance --- and have found that GOD is in one's heart. Thanks for commenting on my poem in here. Sorry hehe am very moody tonight doing some heavy soul searching -) the Reverend Teresa King, dd who no longer preaches in a community church. ~netswan |

LOL Liz! How many wrong concepts we have as kids. I get a kick out of this one, especially the 'spray.' I never heard that before! Thank you for this, and for the smiles. |
