Pretty Is As I comb and twist her thining hair And gently fasten it into a bun With old fashioned hair pins The kind that leave a trail around the house I scarely notice a face lined with wrinkles Although if I look close I know they are there. I remember as a child How ugly I thought I was I believed those horrid names That other children hurled Mother always told me When I'll come home crying Names will never hurt you I didn't believe it. Grandmother would tell me Pretty is as pretty does I thought that was a better saying But still I wished I were pretty. And now as I gently place A soft almost invisible hairnet On my aging friend's head And see and hear her smiles I know grandmother was right. |

Very nice! How very true. ~Astraea "Sometimes stars can only be seen in darkness." "Sorrow's crown of sorrow is remembering happier things." |

I have to add another, so very true here. For the beauty of one comes from within...just lovely! <*\\\>< Where there is faith, there is love. Where there is love, there is peace. Where there is peace, there is GOD. Where there is GOD, there is no need. Hallmark |

sorry but i'm adding another true true to that. Love the way you captured the elderly woman - it reminded me of what my mother used to say to me - that when you are old no one knows whether you were pretty in your youth - but if you are beautiful within, that can be seen in both youth and old age. Great poem!!! |

Thank you for all your kind words. I am glad that you enjoyed this. If someone were to ask me who the greatest influence on my life had been I would have to say my grandmother. This poem was inspired by a sweet neighbor lady who reminded me of my grandmother, many years after my grandmother's passing. Everyone needs a grandmother in their life, everywhere I go I find me one. |
