Knights Ferry Memoir

They walked the Stanislaus
just past the ferry's toll
beneath the covered bridge
where crystal waters roll.
Nostalgic of Knights Ferry
the mill was grinding flour
where the icy river rose
about four feet per hour.

The Sierra Nevada
felt a warm untimely rain
melting freshly fallen snow
to fill the Stanislaus again.
In San Joaquin Valley
the sun was shining bright
for it was a glorious day
to rejoice in the light.

They walked the Stanislaus
just past the ferry's toll
beneath the covered bridge
where crystal waters roll.
Next to the weeping willow
they both inched their way in
under freezing waters
arm in arm and chin to chin.

The Stanislaus River
had just begun to flood
the San Joaquin Valley
with innocence of blood.
Two angels from heaven
waded in the icy swell
to calm a treacherous current
and break a river's spell.

Bob: This is an intriguing tale, though I am not familiar with the background. I know where the Stanislaus River runs as I have spent quite a bit of time in the Sierra Nevadas. Enjoyed your poem.

the painting is a lovely accompaniment! is it a painting of that covered bridge?

lovely thought, that angels still the troubled waters, I'm sure it is so, so often
