What do we tell the children, Lord,
Those innocent and trusting ones?
They should not have to know of war,
Our tiny daughters, little sons.
Help us explain our falling bombs,
That sometimes go a bit astray.
A child is killed, a casualty,
He somehow just got in the way.

They've seen the dreadful pictures of
The falling buildings and the tears.
Give us the words to comfort them,
Protect them from well founded fears.
Childhood should be made of only
Roller skating and happy games.
Children can't flourish in the dread
Of mailed disease and world in flames.

Please help us with the children, Lord.
Show us the error of our ways.
Lead us back to peace and freedom,
And for the children, childhood's days.
Please send angels down to hold them,
As answer to entreating prayers.
In soft angel's wings enfold them.
We pray for ours and also theirs.

Such a big question right now Joyce. Excellent poem! The children need more love and understanding that ever! Some are going to suffer more, because they aren't getting that.

I struggled with this very topic when I had to relate it to my 7-year-old daughter. She wanted to know "why?" and how can you tell them when you don't want to spread more hate? It IS such a complex thing to tell someone so innocent. God help us all and hopefully those angels will fall and help us with the problems we are facing. Beautiful poem...thanks...
