This is a true story, and logged on the Police books for 9/27/00, approximately 8PM. I consider it < !signature-->a unique and special experience, but one I hope never happens again! “Describe it to me”, the officer said, as I hung onto the phone... “Is it black, is it brown, and are you there, right now, at home alone?” I answered, “Yes, I was alone, the color was too hard to tell... But when she opened her mouth and growled, My nerves went straight to Hell!” You see, I had an encounter with a grizzly just last night... And I’m still shaken badly, it was a really horrible fright... I’ll tell you all the details..it wasn’t bad, and it could have been worse... But I figured I’d write it down, so here it is within my verse... At 8PM, I was listening to the storm and blowing wind... I’d just begun an email to a really wonderful friend... When, out of the blue, I heard something running around my little yard... It’s steps were heavy, not like a dog, and I heard it breathing hard... My yard is fenced, I wasn’t too worried, until I heard the cries... They were coming from every dog on the block, and it got me to wondering why... With flashlight in hand, I quietly opened the window that looks to my drive... And that is the moment that fate took control, As I could have been eaten alive! Three feet away from my window she stood, just looking so calm and serene... ‘Twas the Mother of grizzlies, a beautiful creature, and bigger than I’ve ever seen... Standing off to his mama’s side was a cute little teddy bear... With golden eyes, a little round nose, And a cinnamon coat of hair... The mama stood up, as a grizzly will do, if they feel that you are a threat... She opened her mouth, and growled so loud, it’s a sound I shall never forget... I said a prayer and asked forgiveness for anything wrong I have done... I really thought that Death was near... and finally my time had come! That grizzly bear could have knocked out the window, and grabbed me in one easy sweep... I felt a scream coming up through my throat, but I still couldn’t utter a peep... This situation called for less panic, and more for using my head... So, I tried what an Indian chief told me once, I opened my mouth and I said: “I wish you no harm, you beautiful bear, I know that you’re stronger than me... and I thank you for bringing your baby around, for my most humble eyes to see... Now, I will step back, and let you pass, you’ll get no resistance this day... You and your baby are free to go... So, please be on your way!” She looked at me, and dropped to all fours, then started to hurry on... She mauled the neighbor’s garbage can, (just a snack, as the night was young)... I called the police, and with shaking voice,I asked them to please drop by... And then I collapsed into my chair, Where I finally let loose a good cry... The police arrived and drove right up to that bear and the garbage can... She didn’t stop eating until he let loose with a cherry bomb in his hand! Both mama and baby ran straight for the woods, They didn’t get shot, I’m so glad... That’s only been done as a last resort, (if the bear hangs around, that’s real bad.) So, thank you for ‘bearing’ with me... This is long, but it’s one for the books... I know that bear understood me...for she gave me some knowing looks! I will never forget the claws, the growl, and the eyes in that beautiful face... The picture below looks just like her, at home in a com-Passionate place! ![]() Today is a gift.... I'm glad that everyone is safe including the bear, but I guess you may walk a little more cautiously next time your in your yard. We have bears here to I've never seen one but My husband seen one right out in the road, a deer enough for me. |

Poetic form of the story I heard earlier. Great how you can just turn it into a poem like that! Take care. Look closely before opening your door.... ![]() Sandra |

Sunny1, WOW!! What a story you have here!! Not sure what I would do either. I would probably be stunned for a bit. Glad to hear the bears were allowed to retreat safely. Nice writing!! ![]() P.S. Be careful out there!! Lone Wolf Poetry should surprise by fine excess...it should strike the reader as a wording of his own highest thoughts and appear almost a remembrance. -J.Keats |

Wow ... you would have needed to peel me off the roof We don't have bears here though we do have nasty raccoons and killer squirrels ... but we really have to watch for the chipmunks ... they go straight for your bag of peanuts ![]() |

Hi Sandra... Tonight my door is locked, the outside lights are on, and I'm not stepping foot out there!! Although, I must admit that sometimes I'm more afraid of the 2-legged beasts than the 4-legged ones!! Thank you for coming by!! Hi Bonnie... Yes, I'm surprised too. I thought if I made a move of any kind, that mama would be right through the window. I'm glad to see you here tonight, in more ways then one!! Hi Lone Wolf... I was lucky to be inside my trailer! Out in the open would have had a different ending, I'm sure!! Yes...the authorities in Alaska do try very hard not to kill an animal, if there's a chance that it will leave on it's own. Thank you, my friend, and I'll be a little more careful from now on!! Today is a gift.... That is why they call it 'the Present'! |

Hi Rex... Don't ever go up on the roof to get away from a bear, as they'll just come right up after their dinner!! That happens a bit up here. Don't laugh....the squirrels can go on rampages too, like throwing stuff on your trailer roof at 3AM when you're trying to sleep!! Ha!! Thank you for reading!! Today is a gift.... That is why they call it 'the Present'! |

Well.....I guess you just would have had to been there to experience what I did, and keep your cool.....it wasn't too funny at the time. Personally, I am glad that it's over, and there were no fatalities! I just wrote this to take some of the shock out of my system. Glad you enjoyed it, Mark. |

Yes Sunny you would have made a delicious poetic dinner...probably quoting rhyme right up until dinner time...another bear probably tipped her off that poets are tender morsels...ha..ha..James |

Hello James.... Well, I have to disagree, as most of the poets I know have been chewed up pretty good by life already, rendering them unfit as a bear's main meal. Bears like stuff that's tough and unpalatable. Today is a gift.... That is why they call it 'the Present'! |

Sunny1, Great write. You and Kit should collaborate on a book, you could call it "writing verse, unrehearsed for times when my life could not be worse." Be well Kethry "It is the image in the mind that links us to lost treasures; but it is the loss that shapes the image, gathers the flowers weaves the garland."- |

Maybe that ol' she-bear was looking for a winter 'man' too, and saw the hunger in your eyes! lol - Great poem, and a greater adventure. Incidently, that's a great picture of Bill before he went to his manicurist. But I thought he shaved more often? *confused eyes* lol [This message has been edited by LngJhnAg (edited 09-30-2000).] |

Oh WOW Sunny!!! Excellent story telling here ... you had me on the edge of my seat the whole read ... REALLY well done! And what an experience!!! OMG ... glad your panic didn't overtake you at that moment, its amazing what a few calming words can do to alleviate a situation. If you'd done the opposite ... sheesh ... thankfully you didn't! Excellent poem Sunny, and I'm sooooo glad you're OK! ![]() Best wishes, /Kit |

Hello Kit... I want to especially thank you for your concern. This really was a true experience, not a story, and I could have easily been killed on the spot. I wrote it down to alleviate some of the shock that I went through, and I appreciate you realizing that, and caring. That means a lot to me. Thank you...... Today is a gift.... That is why they call it 'the Present'! |

Sunny well thank the lord that you're alright, that's all I can say. The most dangerous thing in the countryside around here is the day trippers, and that's only because they all come tearing down the roads at the first sight of some sun. Your poem was so well written and I loved it Marsha. |
