Aphorism

What cruelty lies within your soul that you
should hope to gain
Immortal peace in some new life, attained
by other's pain!
Renouncing love that God has placed---ah!
not alone with you,
But tenderly and hopefully within the
hearts of two!
To sacrifice your heart may be a feat of
strength divine---
So may your gain be doubly high for having
broken mine!
