Happy Thanksgiving

I figured there had to be more to it,
more, than "Martha’s" pumpkin pie,
a sizzling turkey with all the trimming,
the harvest decorations that we buy.
Friends and relatives getting together,
all so very glad that they came,
Then they sit around after dinner, stuffed,
on the couch, watching a football game.

I never could figure out why,
in the U.S.A, Thanksgiving is so darn late.
Ours is a whole month earlier,
it was kind of hard to relate.
So this Canadian gal did a little research,
And I want to share what it is I found.
I know I have most of the answers now,
armed with Thanksgiving knowledge abound.

The whole idea of Thanksgiving,
came from Europe when a harvest was good.
They gave thanks for their successfulness,
and of course, the abundance of their food.
The a Cornucopia was invented,
a curved goat’s horn filled with fruit and grain,
and when Europeans came to Canada,
they simply started this tradition up again.

In, 1578, Martin Frobisher, held a ceremony,
to give thanks for his safe journey here,
and as other settlers arrived in Canada,
the "thankful ceremony" was held each and every year.

In 1621, in what became the United States,
Indians helped the Pilgrims out at Plymouth Rock,
at the place called the New World they say.
That is how Thanksgiving started in the States,
And of course it is carried on even today.

But in 1750, Americans settlers journeyed up north,
deciding to separate from the rest,
In Nova Scotia they started the "harvest" celebration,
And "Thanksgiving" was then put to the test!

So this is the story of how it all started,
French explorers began holding Thanksgiving each year.
So it was American settlers, and the French that made,
Canadian Thanksgiving, so now at least that’s clear.

In 1879, Parliament declared October 6th our holiday,
and turkey became the food of choice up here once a year.
In 1863, Lincoln declared yours the 4th Thursday in November,
so you could celebrate with a red, white and blue cheer.
Now if you really think about this all,
this all so easy to figure out...
Canada has a shorter growing season,
so our harvest was earlier, that’s what it’s about!
So bottom line here is very plain to see.
the only real difference between the two,
we are both thankful, but we had explorers,
and, well, the pilgrims belonged to you!

Another jewel in your crown, Mysteria. I really liked this research project. I lived in Israel for a year in the 70's, and on the kibbutz, a communal farm, we celebrated a holiday called Sukkot, which is also a harvest celebration at the end of the growing season. We had a tractor-drawn wagon filled with fruits, vegetables and grains, Israeli folk dancing, singing, a bonfire, and a wonderful feast. It is one of my best memories. Thanks for reminding me of all the things I have to be thankful for, even this year.

Midnitesun ~ Your Thanksgiving sounded absolutely fantastic! Thank you for reading this romp through my mind.

Sunshine ~ Well, not sure it is well done, but I sure spent time trying to figure out why your Thanksgiving is so much later than ours. And WOW you guys sure go all out on Halloween too, I can't wait to read those poems. Thanks for reading this one.
