In an upside-down garden

He looked at me
as I bit my lip
and smiled, too scared
to move two inches closer
and he turned to walk away

You always get a second chance
they say, at least
when it all comes down to it

I was ready next time
when he looked at me like that
and I surrendered the promise I made
not to jump in with both feet

as I leaned in,
the wind blowing,
and kissed him.

Hopefully that works.
