North of Hell

Could your back
         bear me awhile
     because I'm tired of crawling
down this dead-end road
    of nothing special

Nothing to gain
     or prove
in a place so familiar
        I don't recognize
   myself

     Hesitation hits hardest
when the stakes
are highest,
        and only lovers
suffer the pain

     of never knowing
