Love untrue and superficial, The vainest sparkle holds; Decanted into an ornate pot On a stage of velvet folds. Take a curtsey, bend a bow, So glamorous the show; When the curtain falls and the thrill is gone - Remains an empty row. False Love slips past the brocade folds And silent drifts away; To leave but dried and empty shell Of hardened, bitter clay. In vain to lash with weathered tongue What lies on tablet cold — For Love that has been freely traded As a brick of common gold. t |
